California AI Partnership Invests in the Future of Work

Amidst ongoing negotiations on the controversial California Journalism Preservation Act (AB 886), a recently announced partnership between Google and the state of California will take the place of the proposed harmful link tax contained in the bill’s language, providing funding for both state and local newsrooms and a National AI Accelerator.

If passed, AB 886 would have threatened access to the open flow of information, especially for news online. Despite multiple rounds of amendments, the bill remained in conflict with the Copyright Act and interstate commerce, and also included potential violations of free speech. Additionally, the approach would also undermine local publications seeking to engage with audiences and foster online communities.

The goal of the accelerator is to empower organizations to use artificial intelligence (AI) in their day-to-day responsibilities, teaching newsrooms as well as other businesses to use AI tools and resources for aspects of the business that could benefit from automation. In assisting publications with new technologies, the accelerator is working to help newsrooms build a viable business model for the future.

This initiative is expected to begin in 2025 and will bring nearly $250 million in funding. These investments seek to accelerate innovation and support local businesses through research and assistance using the latest in AI technologies.

AI investment stands to unlock innovations that can boost the economy and elevate sectors that have yet to fully implement emerging technologies, thus positioning the American economy for greater global competitiveness. The news industry can benefit from AI’s ability to improve efficiency. Small publications have said that AI will be a “defining factor” in the innovative capacity of news organizations. In addition, many predict that AI will be widely adopted by smaller newsrooms that need to ensure their time is used valuably. The ability of this technology is crucial in ensuring publications with a smaller staff can optimize their workflows and focus on publishing high-quality information, reporting, and analysis.

AI can assist reporters and smaller newsrooms with content curation, transcription, and analysis of gathered data for stories. The technology can also aid with content repurposing on social media and can automate the process of live updates. At a time when publishing speed and thoughtful reporting are key to a newsroom’s survival, AI can be extremely helpful to publications of all sizes.

Through investment in tools and resources that harness the power of AI, this technology can be made accessible to a broader range of people and organizations. In turn, this presents an important opportunity whereby AI can enable various industries, including newsrooms, to evolve, adapt, and streamline workflows. Investment in innovation is vital for the future of work and American competitiveness.

Innovation

New technologies are constantly emerging that promise to change our lives for the better. These disruptive technologies give us an increase in choice, make technologies more accessible, make things more affordable, and give consumers a voice. And the pace of innovation has only quickened in recent years, as the Internet has enabled a wave of new, inter-connected devices that have benefited consumers around the world, seemingly in all aspects of their lives. Preserving an innovation-friendly market is, therefore, tantamount not only to businesses but society at large.
